A Message from Dean Rebecca Murdock

The healthcare industry is increasingly essential to the U.S. economy. A report released by The Hamilton Project in 2020, “A Dozen Facts about the Economics of the U.S. Health-Care System,” noted that the healthcare sector employs 11 percent of American workers and accounts for 24 percent of government spending.Similar facts and figures could fill its own newsletter, which is why we’ve dedicated this edition of Innovating Business to the crucial role the College of Business plays in preparing students to lead in the world of healthcare through our Bachelor of Science in Healthcare Management (BHMC) and Master of Healthcare Administration (MHA).

You can read about BHMC Program Director and Assistant Professor Ron Brouwer, who shares his vast healthcare management experience with students. We also highlight an alumna of the BHMC program putting her degree to work at a healthcare facility in upstate New York, as well as a current student from Texas who is learning from the real-world experiences of her professors and her classmates. You can learn more about our BHMC and MHA programs, specifically how Assistant Professor Brouwer and the director of our master’s program, Professor Mike Freel, stay focused on meeting the needs of students. And be sure you take a few minutes to read about College of Business Advisory Board Member Ron Kloewer, a hospital CEO who offers valuable insight into the current state of healthcare and the role our students can play in molding its future.

Of course, a common thread through all these stories is innovation, demonstrated daily through the work of our professors, the content of our programs, and the substance of the leaders we develop.

Of course, if you want to know more about anything the College of Business is doing, my door is always open, as is my inbox. Contact me.
